Honda Motor green lights construction of US MRO facility

Under the terms of the agreement KBR Building Group will provide general contracting services for the 90,000-square-foot facility being constructed to support HondaJet – the company’s light business jet aircraft.

KBR Building Group reported that it has teamed with minority-owned general contractor firm The Daniele Company of Durham, North Carolina, for the project.

The MRO will include a 24/7 support centre to facilitate maintenance for up to 12 aircraft simultaneously. There will be back shops for composite and sheet metal structures, avionics and interiors, and a customer area with a pilot’s lounge, individual work rooms with conference space, and a flight planning room situated near the aircraft ramp side entrance.

The facility will have a 4,000 sq ft environmentally controlled spare parts warehouse. Site work has begun with occupancy scheduled for the second half of 2013, prior to HondaJet’s entry into service.

KBR Building Group, headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, is a construction services company serving industrial, commercial, healthcare and institutional clients in the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic and Southwest regions of the United States.

According to Honda Aircraft Company, the teams of KBR Building Group and The Daniele Company team were selected to construct the new MRO based on their aviation construction experience, strong diversity plan and objectives, diverse and experienced project team, the competitiveness of the bid, and other internal criteria.

In 2011, KBR Building Group completed construction of a 260,000 sq ft production facility for Honda Aircraft Company, located at the same site as the MRO currently under construction, in Greensboro, North Carolina.
